I painted this from behind Mesopotamia Station looking towards Erewhon Station and the far off Lawrence Valley. The wide braided river in the centre right is the Rangitata.
This was the area that early settler, Samuel Butler took to living in, one of the most spectacular parts of the South Island.
Not surprisingly it was also chosen by Peter Jackson as the location for the creation of Edoras Village for the Rings film.
